After giving umpire Angel Hernandez a verbal beating he won't soon forget, Bryce Harper surprised a little fan by giving him a gift.
In the Pirates' 3-2 victory over the Phillies on Thursday, Hernandez—one of Major League Baseball's most criticized officials
called Harper's check swing a dubious strike on the third pitch.
"Angel in the middle of something again," Harper said following the game. It just happens every year. The plot and details remain unchanged.
Jason Delay, the catcher, and James Hoye, the home plate umpire, both pleaded with Hernandez, the third baseman, to make the call.
Harper was immediately incensed by the decision and went up to the third baseline to yell at the umpire.
When Hernandez removed Harper from the game, he had barely made it a third of the way.
Before ultimately confronting Hernandez, Harper proceeded to irately sprint toward third and contest the call.
